Summer Sessions:San Francisco- “What If” by Summer Breeze

It started in Austin with an acoustic singer from New York City, then to Indiana with an R&B artist from LA.  Turtlist Media is hitting five more cities across the country to shoot performance videos for talented artists of all styles.  The idea?  To encourage an “artists helping artists” in the Asian American community by providing high quality performance videos for various artists to upload in place of their usual YouTube videos.  Let’s rethink the way we share our talents and grow alongside each other.

Amiel Maquilan a.k.a. Summer Breeze is an acoustic artist from South San Francisco.  Writing, composing and recording his own music since he was 16, Summer Breeze uses his music to inspire everyone who listens.  Drawing inspiration from his close friends, like Jeremy “Passion” Manangdo and Cathy Nguyen, he writes his own music as well as covers current, popular songs.  Turtlistmedia.com presents “What If”, an original by Summer Breeze.

HBO’s East of Main Street: Asians Aloud available for free viewing!

HBO’s East of Main Street, a special feature sharing the life experiences of Asian Americans, is available for free online viewing for a few more days! As lived experiences impact so much of what humans become and the way they affect the world around them, this is an incredibly relatable series of accounts that showcases the diverse, intersecting experiences of Asian America. Turtlist loves it because of the way in which it gives voice and complexity to those who rarely get it.

You can watch the whole thing free at http://www.charter.net/tv/tvonline/play?vid=277730&vendor=hbo

It’s only up till May 31! So watch, be inspired, and spread the word!

Turtlist Documentaries

In my spare time, I make videos for various organizations as well. Here is a documentary I produced about a Taiwanese American summer camp in Indiana. Fond memories since childhood.

What is TAF and why do its campers seem so passionate about it? Is it for me or my children? How can I get involved?

This documentary shares the experiences of Tafers young and old and seeks to discover how an annual week-long summer camp can possibly spark a nationwide community of passionate Taiwanese Americans who are growing up to impact the nation through every medium from art to politics. This intense, emotional, and indescribably fun summer camp helps kids of all ages find and celebrate their identities as young Asian American men and women in the midst of their peers at home as well as learn how to deal with parent-child relationships, racism/discrimination, and the plain struggles of growing up as a minority in America.

The Delivery Boy, MAASU, and the beauty of collaboration

It’s been almost two years since I last worked on a narrative short and I’ve learned so much since then. Unveiled at the MAASU conference at Ohio State, The Delivery Boy received encouraging laughter and applause. It was refreshing to work on this and a whole lot of fun. I am very glad to be able to apply the  things I’ve learned these last couple years to everything from the production of the short to the commentary of its content. Thus, Turtlist Media is proud to present the first look at what will be a series of shorts under a year long project. Projected to release in 2011.

Ahem* The Delivery Boy

One of my goals before graduating college was to speak at a conference. MAASU gave me an incredibly appreciated invitation to facilitate a workshop at their spring conference at OSU. To my surprise (and nervousness) the room was packed! Thanks everyone who came out for your support (especially those of your who had to stand). Also, thank you MAASU board and OSU for having me!

A few of you asked about the collaboration song between Andrew Lo and Wat Deeudomchan. You can find it here! Feel free to download (for freesies) right off the widget!

Lastly, I met some inspiring talent at the conference. Check out JR Aquino’s duet with Erika David

and New York talent manager Jon de Castro

Till next time,
