People from all over the world are discovering the progressive new sound of Hsu-nami, a rock band from New York that has replaced the melodies of a lead singer with the traditional sounds of the erhu. Their music can be heard at various menus all over the world, including the 2008 Olympics in Beijing.
Jack Hsu brings the original sound to the band, Hsu-nami, with crazy vibrations of his amplified erhu, a traditional two-string bowed instrument that is often used in Chinese classical music and folk ensembles.
While their music is inspired from classical Chinese music, their sound is anything but traditional. Hsu-nami has blended sounds of East and West into something that is almost neither but definitely fresh.
Hsu began learning the violin at the age of four. By 1998, his musical talents were moved over to the erhu and has played everywhere from China to Carnegie Hall.
“I stopped playing music when I went to college,” said Hsu. “I swear I was going to major in business.”
While pursuing a business degree, Hsu could not deny his love for music.
“After a while I started playing the guitar in college,” he said. “I tried to play the guitar but realized I was just one in a crowd doing it. So, I just picked up what I was good at playing: my Chinese fiddle, the Erhu, which I love.”
Today, Hsu can be found at venues all over the world, introducing their music to audiences of all kinds.
For such a progressive style, the discovery of Hsu’s sound was actually inspired by his fandom for the guitar.
“I started composing music influenced by guitar virtuosoes and my stage presence is influenced from a lot guitar players as well.”
Hsu-nami’s success can be attributed to their originality and passion. For Hsu, a few important pieces of wisdom have come out of the whirlwind of his musical journey.
“Write your music. Be true to yourself. Practice a lot and don’t sell out,” said Hsu.
